There is no band out there that does what the SFJAZZ Collective is doing…a true collective, a meeting of brilliant jazz minds, a concert that affirms this uniquely American art form. Since the Collective made its debut in 2004, the band has delivered jazz that looks back to the masters and forward to a new standard of virtuosity and ensemble playing. The Collective has a home of its own in the new SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco and a touring history of many of the greatest performing arts centers around the world. In the 2013-14 season, the Collective will celebrate its tenth anniversary with a program of its greatest work from the past decade. The program ranges from the band’s fresh take on Horace Silver’s bop classic, “Cape Verdean Blues,” to Coltrane’s classic “Africa,” and the remarkable re-imagining of the Stevie Wonder classic, “Superstition,” as well as the Collective’s own original compositions. The SFJAZZ Collective was named Small Group Ensemble of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association in 2009 and was nominated for the same honor again in 2012.

Sangamon Auditorium’s presentation of SFJAZZ will be dedicated to the memory of Barrett Deems (March 1, 1914 – September 15, 1998). Billed as “the fastest drummer in the world,” the Springfield-born Deems spent five years as Louis Armstrong’s drummer and also worked for Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey and Woody Herman. A cake reception will be held in the lobby following the concert in celebration of Deems’ 100th birthday and his 70-year career.
